Transmission second harmonic generation in CdTe at 1.064 μm

Transmission geometry measurements of the efficiency of second harmonic generation in various thicknesses of CdTe samples were made to determine the conversion efficiency dependence on material thickness. Neglecting pump depletion, it is found that for samples of well-defined symmetry, the second harmonic conversion efficiency scales with film thickness, with no observed enhancement owing to coherence length effects. The angular dependence of the observed second harmonic light in films of well-defined symmetry is consistent with second harmonic generation originating in the bulk.     

Quantitative determination of CGS 18102A, a new anxiolytic, in human plasma using capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

CGS 18102A is a novel hexahydrobenzopyranopyridine that has a mixed pharmacological profile of 5-HT-1A agonist and 5-HT-2 antagonist properties. Based upon these mechanisms, the compound is predicted to have anxiolytic efficacy with possible efficacy in depression. Preclinical studies in the rat have shown the drug to be well absorbed and extensively metabolized. Because of the anticipated low plasma levels in humans a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analytical method has been developed and validated to determine plasma concentrations of CGS 18102A in early clinical studies. The method utilizes CGS 18416A as the internal standard. Samples (1 mL) were extracted with pentane:ethyl acetate (75:25, v:v). Extracts were then concentrated and analysed directly by GC/MS. Separation was accomplished on a methylsilicone capillary column (30 m x 0.32 mm i.d.). GC/MS was carried out under positive ion ammonia CI conditions, with selected ion monitoring of the [M + H]+ ions (m/z = 262 and 248) for CGS 18102A and CGS 18416A, respectively. The method was successively applied to the analysis of clinical samples from an ascending multidose safety and tolerability study conducted in six normal healthy male volunteers.     

Integrated optical components on atom chips

We report on the integration of small-scale optical components into silicon wafers for use in atom chips. We present an on-chip fibre-optic atom detection scheme that can probe clouds with small atom numbers. The fibres can also be used to generate microscopic dipole traps. We describe our most recent results with optical microcavities and show that a sufficiently high finesse can be achieved to enable single-atom detection on an atom chip. The key components have been fabricated by etching directly into the atom chip silicon substrate.     

Self‐Assembly of a Giant Tetrahedral 3 d–4 f Single‐Molecule Magnet within a Polyoxometalate System

A giant tetrahedral heterometallic polyoxometalate (POM) [Dy₃₀Co₈Ge₁₂W₁₀₈O₄₀₈(OH)₄₂(OH₂)₃₀]^56?, which shows single‐molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, is described. This hybrid contains the largest number of 4f ions of any polyoxometalate (POM) reported to date and is the first to incorporate two different 3d–4f and 4f coordination cluster assemblies within same POM framework.     

Development of standards for reliable surface analyses by ISO technical committee 201 on surface chemical analysis

The need for reliable surface analyses together with quality‐management requirements for analytical laboratories led the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to form its Technical Committee (TC) 201 on Surface Chemical Analysis in 1991. This article describes the organization of TC 201, the strategies that have been found useful for identifying and assessing possible projects for new international standards, and the 57 international standards and other documents prepared to date by TC 201. Standards have now been developed for Auger‐electron spectroscopy, glow‐discharge spectroscopy, various types of scanning probe microscopy, secondary‐ion mass spectrometry, sputter‐depth profiling, total‐reflection X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X‐ray reflectometry. In addition, standards have been developed with definitions of terms used in surface chemical analysis; the handling, preparation of specimens for surface analysis; information and data‐transfer formats; and methods for determining the lateral resolution of beam‐based methods of surface analysis. Experience in making rheological measurements at high pressures

Summary We review the difficulties encountered in the design and operation of apparatus for rheological studies on liquids at pressures up to 900 MN m^–2 and temperatures from –30 to 120°C. Such rheological information is required in connection with elastohydrodynamic lubrication in which high pressures and shear rates are encountered.With 3 figures
